What to do?

28th December 2013

Purpose:

To explain all the material in the manual that we gather under the topic of "What to do?", and how to get the sequence of these things right.

What is this?

The Topic heading 'What to do?' gathers together all of the practical, intervention (doing) aspects of delivering AMBIT. Choosing and getting on with What to do? can really only happen when the process of Assessment (see What's the problem?) has supported a mentalized understanding of the young person's condition.

Look at the Sub-topics under this heading in the Show references and info panel for this page.

What to do NOW...!

Below are tag buttons that show drop-down menus of material under these topic headings
Managing Risk contains material on aspects of managing risks in general, and in relation to specific situations Manage CLIENT RELATIONSHIP contains material on the therapeutic relationship between worker and client.
Manage CLINICAL PROBLEM Lists a range of work situations (problems, scenarios, etc; not always "clinical" in the the technical sense of that word) with suggested approaches Working with your NETWORKS lists common issues that can arise in multi-agency working, and suggestions for helpful responses.
Active Planning is one of the Core Features of AMBIT, and drives the development of a rationally-sequenced and collaborative plan of action. CheckLists - provide checklists that may help guide a practitioner through the key steps involved in a whole variety of tasks in this manual.
Our Resources Lists resources available to a local team in their area (local teams will populate this topic themselves. OUR LOCAL Teamwork and Governance lists out material that local teams will add - describing "how WE do THIS work, HERE, with THESE clients..."
Manualization this gathers material on how teams may engage in documenting the details of "how WE do THIS work, HERE, with THESE clients..." SUSTAIN best practice gathers material on how teams and individual workers take proactive measures to ensure that their work is sustainable.
Specific interventions lists links to manualized guides on how to do a wide rang of particular work that might be called for. Monitoring OUTCOMES links to activities to assess whether these interventions, and the overall work of the team are effective.
QuickWins are gathered and planned during the assessment phase and should be added to throughout - useful for deploying if momentum stalls. I'm stuck: what next? lists other material useful if you are stuck in your efforts to keep the work moving.

Getting the Sequence right

In order to avoid missing out important tasks, it is important to sequence things correctly (see WhichInterventionWhen, and you may find CheckLists helpful):

  1. The Multi-Domain Assessment should be completed before embarking on focused interventions; this leaves you with...
    1. A completed AIM Form, and ranked suggestions in your AIM suggested interventions.
    2. A completed RiskAssessment
  2. Formulation and Treatment Aims are drawn up, taking into account this material and preferably in discussion with the young person and carers, and significant others.
  3. Active Planning translates this into a clear and rationally-sequenced plan of action.
